bulletIn 2005 there were about 80 specialists in ORL-HNS active in New Zealand, representing 12% of the total number of surgeons. There are 12 advanced trainees in the specialty in 2006. 2 – 3 training positions become available each year.

bulletThe recommended specialist to population ratio for ORL-HNS is 1:50,000. The actual ratio in New Zealand in 2005 was 1:64,000, indicating a shortage of specialists in this field. These numbers are not that useful as a significant number of the current ORL surgeons are in their 50s and will retire in the next 10 years. The population is ageing and demanding/needing more ORL surgery. Techniques and types of operations available are also increasing.
