What are the financial rewards?
 |
Consultant, public sector — as of 29/06/2009 the salary range is
approximately $128,500 to $195,500 depending on years of
service. See the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists
Collective
Agreement |
Salaries are not very high in comparison with those in clinical
medicine, especially if you are working in a university setting.
During Basic Training, trainees are provided with a non-taxable
study grant of $38,000 in the first year and $39,000 in the second
year. These amounts are equivalent to taxable incomes of $49,060 and
$50,550 respectively. During Advanced Training, each trainee enters
into an employment contract with the training site employer and
there is no standardised salary level, although it would usually be
similar to the RMO pay scale for a 40-hour week. Indicative salaries
for public health physicians range between $105,000 - $150,000 and
employment contracts usually provide for a generous amount of study
leave. There is little or no on-call work except for Medical
Officers of Health.
