ABOUT THORACIC & SLEEP MEDICINE
Thoracic medicine is concerned with the respiratory system, which
includes the upper airway, the lung, the chest wall and ventilatory
control system. The specialty employs diagnostic techniques, tests
and procedures to assess and treat a wide range of conditions and
diseases that affect the respiratory system 1. Sleep
medicine is an integral part of thoracic medicine and is an
ever-expanding field that comprises sleep breathing disorders,
disorders of daytime somnolence, insomnias, parasomnias, and
neurological and psychiatric disorders affecting sleep. An
increasing number of thoracic physicians work in the area of sleep
medicine. 1
